Commitment
“motivated by goals”
Obtaining an injury can impact an athletes commitment to their sport, and then challenge how they are able to commit to rehabilitation. In mentally tough athletes, they are motivated by long term goals, and do not let short term opportunities distract them from those goals. Commitment can manifest itself, as previously mentioned, by rehab attendance, continuing rehabilitation exercises at home, and even considering the rehabilitation process to be achievable. Based on the Integrated Model of Response to Sport Injury (Weise-Bjornstal, 1998), commitment relates largely to the behavioral response and cognitive appraisal.
The main skills introduced through this section are goal setting, goal mapping, and goal management. Setting appropriate goals sets up an individual for success not only in sport, but also in rehab because they are able to have a direction of how they want their rehab experience to go.
